ut sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Pet. 3:15).

Francis Schaeffer: a man who obeyed this commandment
We are to keep ourselves in readiness
Should any ask a reason for the hope
That is within us and which we confess.
The great Deceiver does not sleep or rest,
Enticing people toward the slippery slope,
And so we keep ourselves in readiness.
The truth is lovely in a silken dress;
Her servant comes in sackcloth tied with rope,
A humble penitent who must confess
His great unworthiness, but also stress
Her grace, the only reason he can cope,
And thus he keeps himself in readiness.
Donald T. Williams trying to obey this commandment
We are but beggars sharing our success
With other tramps who also want to grope
Toward the bread with us. And we confess
That ours is not the brilliance we express.
Christ is the Light; we aim the telescope.
That’s how we keep ourselves in readiness
To justify the great Hope we confess.
